Chip and I opened the next day to a packed house! We were so busy, that we ran out of food, and realized that we were far too busy to do it all ourselves. What a great community! What an amazing opening day!
After slinging as much BBQ as two people possibly could on that first day, we called on friends and family to help work the restaurant for a few weeks until we could hire some help. So much for my part time job at the mall! It has been with the support of our family, friends, devout customers and community that we have been able to build and grow J.D.’s BBQ into the BBQ joint you know today. And the rest as they say, is History.
J.D.’s Bar-B-Que opened it’s doors on September 19, 1999. It was take-out place, inside a small farmer’s market on Bells Ferry Road at Kellogg Creek, about a mile south of where we are now. The market closed and we saw many businesses come and go during the four years we were located there.
We quickly outgrew this little spot and opened at our current location July 31, 2003. We now offer a full service dining room, as well as take-out, and catering. We have a comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere with great food and service at a reasonable price. But I digress…
By the time we had the smoker towed down the road (we traded the cost of the tow for some BBQ), we were exhausted and broke. We spent everything we had on the new place and a grill full of food for opening day. We didn’t even have enough money to put in the register for our till. We called in every favor we could, and it was finally time open our new dine-in BBQ restaurant… We were EXCITED!
Let me tell you a little more about the 2003 opening of J.D.’s current eat-in BBQ restaurant. Chip and I worked ourselves half-to-death to get the doors open. I quit my job as a legal assistant in Atlanta, to help with the business, with the thought that after the busy summer months, I would get a part-time job to help supplement our income.
There was so much work to do: remodeling, painting, and cleaning. There was the kitchen and dinning room to set-up. We had the health regulations to comply with, and the list goes on and on. Speaking of the Health Department, check out our inspection score. We’ve never had anything less than an “A”. We’re pretty proud of that.
